Ask Jack and Jill.com Current question on Health:
Q. If I eat cheese before I drink will it help with hangovers?

Jack's Answer:
I wish. Stay hydrated. Hangovers are caused by lack of water in the body. If you are friends with a cop, firefighter or paramedic, ask if they can get you a few I.V. bags. They work unbelievably. The best way not to have a hangover is not to drink, drink in moderation and don't mix different types of alcohol. Unfortunately that will lead to a boring night. Cheers.

Jill's Answer:
A lot of people think yes.  I think it's important to eat anything and not drink on an empty stomach.  I do think it would decrease the hangover as opposed to not eating.

Ask Jack and Jill.com question on Health:
Q:  I have an intense hatred for birth control pills of any kind, they make me feel crazy among other side effects. I need a birth control option that doesn't involve hormones, and my husband refuses to use condoms because he says it's the benefit of being married. I definitely don't want to have anymore kids, three is plenty. Are there other non-hormonal options out there? p.s. He will not get a vasectomy!
Jack's Answer:
This is gonna be a typical guy answer so be prepared. The pull out method, more oral sex, possibly a diaphragm, that's all I got for you on this on.
Jill's Answer:
Absolutely. Being that you already have children, look into the I.U.D. There are two kinds, one is hormonal, one is not. Choose the non-hormonal one. The doctor inserts a t-shaped coil at the entrance of the uterus during an office visit. That's it. It can stay in place for up to 10 years and you never have to think about birth control. It is 99% effective and virtually no side effects.

Q: How do you stay in shape while trying to achieve good grades and a good attendance in school?  By Tim
Jack's Answer:
For starters, I just want to say it's not easy being a teenager and dealing with all that life throws at you, including school. That being said, as a teen you start to learn how to manage your time more wisely. I would start by keeping a handwritten schedule with you and schedule time to either ride your bike, treadmill, gym, walk the beach, any sort of cardio exercise that you can, and schedule that for a minimum of 3 days a week, even if you have to schedule it in the evenings as "study time".  Once you schedule it in on paper, it makes it a real possibility to stick to your schedule just as if you were going to schedule a dentist appointment. Exercise is extremely important especially as a teen not only to help you stay healthy, keep you focused, and it's a great stress reliever. I hope this helped
Jill's Answer:
I think it's important to watch what you eat and make sure it's healthy and wholesome to give you the energy you need to make it through a day of classes.  Always balanced with whole grains, protein and fruit and snack often on fruit and vegetables.  If you live in a nice climate, walking to or from school can be a good option, also grab some friends to play tennis or basketball.  It's important to keep a good balance in your life, so make time to exercise. Even 10 minute walks a few times a day will help.  And what teenager doesn't love mall walking?

Q: What can be done about leg cramps? By Beth
Jack's Answer:
Eat bananas. When your body is cramping it is usually because you are lacking potassium, calcium or sodium. Bananas are a great source of potassium. You also want to stay hydrated so drink plenty of water

Jill's Answer:
There are several remedies that can be tried. If it's cramps of the restless leg syndrome variety, where it bothers you mostly at night in bed, try tiring out your legs during the day, say by brisk walking at least 30 minutes a day,or jogging. I know there are some homeopathic pills offered in drug stores, but I've never heard anyone review the products favorably or poorly. There are some old wives tales I've heard also, drinking a shot of apple cider vinegar daily, sleeping with a bar of soap, but once again I'm not sure how effective these are. If it's the cramp like a charley horse, gentle massage and stretching will help to alleviate it, but we all know it hurts like the dickens. With those you want to aim for prevention. Don't overexercise, make sure you stretch before and after a workout, stay hydrated, and make sure your iron levels are sufficient.

Ask Jack and Jill.com question on Health:
My parents are aging and we are looking into an assisted living facility. I have the sole responsibility of caring for them since my brother and his wife offer no help, physically, monetarily, or emotionally. This is really wearing on me and I'm finding it more and more difficult everyday. My mom is senial and my father needs constant care. Can I force my brother and his wife to help in some way?
Jack's Answer:
There are many state and federally run programs to assist you with these situations. Each state offers different help so you will need to speak to a local representative and find the best program for your parents.   I'm not exactly sure what the laws are in your state, but I would forget about your brothers help. Just remember that if he ever needs your help/
Jill's Answer:
Instead of forcing them to help in some way, maybe plan some time with just your brother and his wife, a quiet dinner or something similar and tell him you want to discuss amicably what's going on with the parents and yourselves as you would want the same if you were in your parent's shoes. As far as facilities or options for your parents, there are many non-profit organizations that can help you with your decision. I will add links. I would be weary of any for profit facilities and take the information they give you with a grain of salt as they obviously would be bias. At any rate, wherever you decide to place your parents, make sure you and your brother and his wife tour the facility yourself a few times and really ask yourself the question, would you want to be here if you were in your parent's situation.

Q. When you hold in a fart, where does it go? Jeff
Jack's Answer:
Obviously in your case, straight to your head.
Jill's Answer:
It travels back up the bowel and intestines and will be released later, most likely in your sleep if you continue to hold them in.

Ask Jack and Jill.com question on Health:
Q: I'm a guy in my late 30's and have been feeling really "off" lately. I've been moody, lethargic and depressed. I have always exercised but lately it's such a chore. My stress levels are pretty much the same as always, with the exception that this is putting a strain on my marriage. I hate doctors and would like to avoid them at all costs. Any opinions on what is going on or how to make it better? By David

Jack's Answer:
It sounds to me like you need to change something in your routine. If you do the same routine over and over it gets to be monotonous. Add some excitement in your life. Go to a concert or sporting event. Do something with a high energy atmosphere. Switch up your exercise routine also. Don't just lift weights in a gym. That right there gets me depressed. Play sports outside or find a new hobby. Stick with something outdoors so you can get some sun. The sun and fresh air will rejuvenate your energy. Do something spontaneous with your wife. Take her out to that new restaurant. If all else fails, get your buddies and go to Vegas for a long weekend. I hate to say it but if that doesn't work then you better go to the doctor
Jill's Answer:
Sounds to me like you may have a hormonal deficiency. I recommend getting your hormone levels checked, which you can do on your own without seeing a doctor. I believe labcorp has a site that you can pay for the testing panel you need online and go to the closest location to have the blood drawn. They then email you the results, and if anything is showing out of range you can then choose a doctor who specializes in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy where he can prescribe the natural hormone supplement that your body is lacking. You will be feeling back to normal quickly.
Ask Jack and Jill.com question on Health:
Q. They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but I'm never really hungry in the morning so I can't eat a "meal". I can eat a lot at dinner unfortuanately, cause I know that's backwards. Is there something wrong with me? Jane
Jack's Answer:
There is definitely something wrong with you because I do the same thing. What I’ve learned, and what I am doing right now is making myself get in the routine of eating in the morning. I’m never hungry, but I make myself eat a banana or a breakfast bar every morning. I’ve noticed that after a week or so that my body adapts to this routine and becomes hungry in the morning.  Now that I have conditioned myself,  I eat a descent size breakfast which in turn makes me want to eat less for lunch and dinner. I also notice that my energy level is a lot better and I am more productive in the mornings. So the saying is true, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but dinner is still my favorite.
Jill's Answer:
I actually know a lot of people who have the same habit.  Breakfast is important to balance your blood sugar and boost your metabolism, so you might want to make a few changes and see if you can incorporate it into your day.  Because you eat a huge dinner, you are probably still full from the night before.  Try snacking throughout the day, eating a lighter dinner, and see if you are hungrier for breakfast the next day.  If you aren't hungry, try to force something light, or try a protein shake.  Since you aren't hungry it might be easier to make healthy choices, and if you eat small meals throughout the day you won't be starving at dinner time.

Q. What time of the month is the best time my wife and I can fornicate safely without protection and without getting pregnant? She does not take birth control. By Carl
Jack's Answer:
Carl, sadly I have to say never. I don’t know your woman’s cycle so I can’t predict the day of the month, but you have the least chance of getting her pregnant on the first day of her period.  I would go ahead and pick out kids names though.
Jill's Answer:
There is no 'safe' time of the month. The best odds to get her pregnant are when she ovulates, which is usually days 14-16 of her cycle, day one being the day she gets her period. So anytime prior, during or after ovulation are bad bets. The sperm can stay in her for several days which makes it a gamble you shouldn't be taking. Try the non-hormonal I.U.D. or discuss your options with your doctors.
